Our Story

Mackenzie Yeates and Rami Helali in the Egyptian Cotton fields of the Nile Delta

Kotn was born from a desire for good quality, simple essentials that didn’t cost a fortune. The essentials are the things we can’t live without, the basics at the core of everyday moments. At Kotn, we work to elevate the clothes you spend your life wearing, and so reimagine your most ordinary utilities. Why? Because your essentials are essential. Plain and simple.

We focus on one naturally remarkable fibre: our namesake, authentic Egyptian cotton. Grown in only one place in the world — the Nile Delta — Egypt’s “white gold” is finer, softer, and more breathable than any other cotton. This noble fibre produces the most practical yet oh-so-cozy fabric for your everyday standard.

By working directly with cotton farming families in Egypt, we want to rebuild the industry from the inside. We make our own fabrics from raw cotton bought direct from farmers at guaranteed prices. Our model is like farm-to-table, but for your clothes.

Our cotton is then sent to our cut-and-sew factory outside Alexandria. The responsibly-run operation employs locals, securing their craft and their livelihood. By scrapping the middleman, we’ve ensured a fair wage for them, and an honest price for you.

To slow the cycle of child labour, we’ve also partnered with pro-literacy organizations on the ground in the Nile Delta. We are now organizing a fund that builds schools in these rural farming regions. Improving the literacy rate for boys and girls in Egypt will help to improve quality of life for the next generation.

“The B Corp movement is one of the most important of our lifetime, built on the simple fact that business impacts and serves more than just shareholders—it has an equal responsibility to the community and to the planet.”
